Located on the Big island of Hawai'i, the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel is a sparkling 350 room luxury resort on the Kohala Coast. They are consistently rated as one of the best hotels in Hawaii. It's the perfect blend of Hawaiian warmth and a well-deserved international reputation for outstanding personal service. Enjoy the award-winning tennis facilities, championship golf, and beautiful pools. Rooms are elegant with lovely appointments.

Nana I Ke Kumu , “Look at the source,” according to ancient Hawaiian proverb…this is the essential mana‘o or philosophy of Mauna Lani Spa. The Big Island of Hawaii, and especially Kalahuipua‘a, where Mauna Lani sits, is fabled for its sense of place, an island of volcanic cauldrons and snowcapped mountain peaks. A place where extreme elements live in harmony.

Mauna Lani Spa embraces the Big Island’s intrinsic theme of "Fire and Ice" while providing spa-goers with a uniquely Hawaiian experience. When approaching the spa from the resort, your senses harken back to the days of old when Hawaii consisted solely of small villages carved from fields of lava. Nine palm-thatched hale (huts)—two large enough for couples and all with outdoor showers —are surrounded by tropical fragrance gardens of gardenia, ginger, pikake, pakalana, and other beautifully scented flowers. The hale provide for both massage and wet treatments. Also part of the garden-spa design are a meditation and relaxation pavilion, a lava rock sauna and brand new Watsu pool set amongst lava tubes, and a la‘au (healing) garden.

Mauna Lani Spa’s interior includes eight treatment rooms (three facial and five massage), a fitness area, men’s and women’s lockers, steam and showers, an aerobics room, reception area, and a spa retail store. Mauna Lani Spa leads guests on the ultimate “journey” of discovery into gaining new insights, personal growth, and a heightened sense of balance, harmony, and health through Hawaii’s indigenous healing traditions. The spa offers an exquisite menu of specialty Hawaiian treatments, massages, baths, body treatments, skin therapy, and nail care options. Not to be missed are the signature Lava Rock Sauna treatment, the Lomi Lomi Hula massage, and the ancient Pohaku Pa‘a (hot stone) massage.

Throughout its existence, Mauna Lani Resort has striven to find balance between new and old and to maintain the harmony of its surroundings: ancient Hawaiian fishponds, endangered honu (sea turtle), petroglyph fields, and Hawaiian preservation sites. Mauna Lani Spa is a stunning example of this balance—a reflection of the resort’s lifework in preserving the cultural and spiritual environment that is Hawaii.

Hawaiian Treatments

Lomilomi is a spiritual, ancient Hawaiian massage technique passed on through family generations by either the kupuna (elders) or kahuna (keepers of the secret). This treatment begins with a pule (prayer) in the Hawaiian language and employs the use of forearms and elbows to create a rhythmical and vigorous euphoria.

Lomilomi Hula
Lomilomi Hula transcends your being into another dimension with lomilomi strokes choreographed to Hawaiian music. Created by our own kumu (teacher), it is descriptively portrayed as doing the hula (dance) on the body. A must for couples!

Opu Huli
Opu (stomach) huli (turn) was traditionally performed on our keiki (little ones) when they acquired an upset tummy. A candle is lit, your wawae (feet) measured, and a pule repeated while warm kukui nut oil slowly fills your piko (navel). This lomilomi begins at your na'au (abdomen), circulating outward, comforting your entire being. For jet lag, menstrual cramps, gastritis, or any low back or abdominal discomfort, opu huli offers relief.

Pohaku Pa'a
Pohaku Pa'a (basalt stones) had many different uses in Hawaiian culture. The ili'ili (little) stones were fire-heated, then positioned along the spine of a freshly oiled back. Various sizes of hot pohaku pa'a and kukui or coconut nut oils are utilized in this session.

Lava Sauna - The ancient appeal of "Fire & Ice" summons as you gather with others to experience our Lava Sauna. As you step into this open-air sauna, feel the warm 'ili'ili stones under your feet. From the earth, we have taken black clay that helps smooth the skin while drawing impurities from the body. While the heat of the sun-warmed sauna relaxes you, we encourage you to find a quiet calm within as you allow the mud to dry. When the mud has dried, and the stress has dissipated, you will be guided to a private shower where you will rinse and re-moisturize your skin with our signature body oil. This ritual concludes as you meditate in Hale Nahenahe (house of gentle sounds) in our La'au (healing) Garden.

Massage Therapy -- We invite you to experience any of our massages outdoors in our La'au Garden. Our hale, or outdoor garden huts, are booked on availability, so please request when scheduling your massage.
